According to recent reports, Tata's upcoming compact crossover SUV Nexon (Osprey) has been spotted undergoing real-world road tests once again in the country and this time in Wakad (Pune) wrapped in heavy camouflage. The Tata Nexon will be the carmaker's maiden entry for the highly-competitive compact SUV segment in India. Nexon, which was originally showcased as a concept at the 2014 Auto Expo, is the fifth product of the HorizonNEXT strategy. Though Tata Motors is yet to make an announcement about its launch in India, reports claim the Tata Nexon launch in India will happen towards the end of 2016.
Tata Nexon, which is expected to make an appearance at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo in February, will compete against rivals like Ford EcoSport and Mahindra TUV300 in India when launched and might come with a price tag of around Rs 6-10 lakh. Codenamed Tata X104, the compact crossover SUV will be based on a slightly altered version of the X1 platform that also underpins the Tata Bolt and Zest compact sedan.
Talking about the exteriors, the overall dimensions of Tata Nexon measures out to be almost 4m long, 1.73m wide, 1.61m in tall and 2.55 m in wheelbase. The front grille of the car comprises of a mesh-shaped metal pattern with the company's chrome plated logo. The grille is flanked by sleek headlamps on either side that sports Daytime Running LEDs along with normal lights. The roofline of the car bends sharply giving it a hatchback look, whereas the uplifted beltline of the car provides it a crossover look. From the rear, the Nexon comes equipped with conical shaped tail lights. This compact SUV will feature 17-inch multi-spoke stylish alloy wheels with radial tyres for a smooth all terrain drive.
Inside, the car will come equipped with features like, ConnectNext concept will be seen in the floating consoles, head-up display and the next-generation Harmon Infotainment system (HIM). Along with that, the car will also be equipped with an air conditioner unit, foldable rear seats, height-adjustable driver seat and finely stitched leather upholstery providing superior comfort.

As far as safety is concerned, the car is speculated to house features like Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). Furthermore, Traction Control system (TCS) and Electronic stability Programs (ESP) will also be provided to ensure no traction loss and improve the car's stability at sharp curves and bends. Multiple airbags are expected to be available in the standard safety package along with all passenger seat belts, engine immobiliser and child lock feature. The 7-seater Tata Nexon will also be provided with superior suspensions to tackle uneven turns.
Under the hood, the engine line-up of Nexon is expected to include 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine and the 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine similar to the ones fitted in Bolt and Zest and capable of generating 108bhp of maximum power with a peak torque of 170 Nm by the diesel unit while the petrol unit will churn out 88.7bhp of maximum power with a peak torque of 140 Nm. There have also been rumours about a new 1.5-litre petrol engine from the Revotron family. Transmission options will comprise a 5-speed manual and the F-Tronic AMT on the diesel unit. Sources have also speculated that there will also be an option of a 4-wheel drive in Tata Nexon Concept.

The company also claims that this engine has the capability to achieve a fuel economy of almost 17.6 kmpl. With a top speed of approximately 180 kmph, this car is expected to cross the 0-100 kmph mark in under 9 seconds.
